Agriculture and agribusiness

Invest in Ghana's farm economy with the risks in view.

Agricultural investment in Ghana turns on things that move fast: government programmes, input and fuel costs priced in dollars, the cedi, and cocoa. Anansi tracks them from official data, market food prices, COCOBOD's producer price, budget statements and the national press, so policy and price shifts reach you early, and it states plainly what it does not cover yet.

The questions

What agribusiness teams ask us.

Drawn from the questions agribusiness investors ask before committing capital. Several are about track record, which is where a press archive earns its keep.

Policy and programmes

  • Which national agricultural programmes are funded in the 2025 and 2026 budgets, and what has been reported about their delivery?
  • What did the 2025 and 2026 budgets allocate to agriculture and agro-processing?
  • How has farm policy changed since the last election?
  • What does the new Ghana Cocoa Board Act change, and when does it take effect?

Prices and costs

  • How far have food prices risen over the past year?
  • Where was yam cheapest in 2025, and how much did prices vary between regions?
  • How has COCOBOD's producer price changed since the 2020/21 season?
  • How does a weaker cedi change the cost of imported fertiliser, machinery and fuel?

Land and permits

  • What is the legal process for leasing a large tract of customary land, and what makes the lease bankable?
  • Does a joint venture with majority Ghanaian ownership avoid the 50-year lease limit?
  • What does the Land Act, 2020 say about compulsory acquisition and compensation for farmland?

The sector in numbers

  • How fast is agriculture growing, and what share of GDP does it hold?
  • How dependent are Ghana's export earnings on cocoa compared with gold and oil?
  • How have world cocoa prices moved this season, and what does that mean for Ghana's export earnings?
  • How does Ghana's farm sector compare with Côte d'Ivoire's and Nigeria's?

Where Anansi fits

Policy moves the sector. Anansi keeps the record.

Farm programmes, subsidies and trade measures change with the political cycle. The evidence of what was promised, funded and delivered is scattered across budgets, statistics and years of reporting.

  • Track record, not press releases

Budget statements show what was allocated; the press shows what reached farmers. Anansi puts them side by side, with the source for each.

  • Costs are a currency story

Fertiliser, machinery and fuel are priced off the dollar. Anansi reads the cedi, crude oil, diesel and food prices together, so cost questions start from the numbers.

  • Clear about the gaps

Crop production, input prices and weather are not in Anansi yet, and MoFA's latest published market prices are from October 2025. Gaps are listed as in development and prices carry their dates, so you know what an answer can and cannot draw on.
